Journey to a place you remember

FISHING, HIKING AND CYCLING

Upper Waiau River

Fiordland is one of our green and blue planet’s most beautiful spots. Get a taste right on the doorstep of Te Anau River: trout fishing, hiking and cycling adventures.

Description
The Upper Waiau River is an angler’s paradise being well stocked with fighting brown and rainbow trout. It also has movie star good looks to boot. This place starred in the first of the Lord of Rings Trilogy movies and hints at how spectacular the scenery here is.

The Upper Waiau River also plays a supporting role in Fiordland’s newest cyclist attraction recently constructed along the banks of the Upper Waiau. The trail ultimately will link the townships of Te Anau and Manapouri with the bonus of outstanding scenery along the trail.

The Kepler Track, one of NZ Great Walks running along the oppostie side of Waiau river to the cycle trail and offering easy day walking adventures, is a natural playground for visitors looking for options to explore these unforgettable landscapes.

Nature
There’s a palette of species in the forested catchment basin of the Upper Waiau River, including numerous ferns and a bountiful – but – endangered birdlife. You might see Kingfishers, Tui, Bellbird and even Kiwi if you are really lucky. There is a very successful conservation project in motion on this stretch of the river driven by the local children and community, Kids Restore the Kepler. The birdsong that now thrives from their efforts really is very special to experience.

Experiences on offer here
