FISHING, HIKING AND CYCLING
Upper Waiau River
Get a taste of the real Fiordland on the Upper Waiau River: trout fishing, hiking and cycling adventures.
The Upper Waiau River is an angler’s paradise and is well- stocked with hard-fighting brown and rainbow trout. It also has movie star good looks to boot, having starred in the first of the Lord of Rings Trilogy movies. Bordering Fiordland National Park, the scenery here is pretty special.
The Upper Waiau River also plays a supporting role in Fiordland’s newest cycling attraction, the Lake2Lake Cycle Trail, recently constructed along the banks of the Upper Waiau. The trail will ultimately link the two Fiordland townships of Te Anau and Manapouri.
The Kepler Track, one of NZ Great Walks, runs along the opposite side of the Waiau River to the cycle trail and offers easy-going day walking adventures.
There’s a palette of species in the forested catchment basin of the Upper Waiau River, including numerous ferns and native birds. You might see Kingfishers, Tui, Bellbird and even Kiwi if you are really lucky. There is a very successful conservation project in motion on this stretch of the river driven by the local children and community, Kids Restore the Kepler. The birdsong that now thrives from their efforts really is very special to experience.
