Kepler Track Huts, Tickets & Logistics: The Complete 2026 Booking Guide

Tags

The Kepler Track is the most accessible of Fiordland's Great Walks - and that makes it one of the most competitive to book. Here's how to navigate it.

The Kepler Track has a unique advantage among New Zealand's Great Walks: it starts and ends in Te Anau. No flights and no long road transfers.

That convenience comes with a catch - it's one of the most sought-after Great Walk bookings in New Zealand. Here's a clear-eyed guide to the booking system, costs, and logistics for 2026.

How the Kepler Track booking system works

The Kepler Track Great Walk season runs from late October to late April. During this time, the three main huts - Luxmore, Iris Burn and Moturau - operate as Great Walk huts with mandatory advance bookings.

Bookings open through the DOC website (doc.govt.nz) in May for the upcoming season. For the most popular huts and dates (particularly Luxmore Hut, which has alpine views and fills fastest), expect high demand the day bookings open.

When do Kepler Track bookings open for the 2026-27 season?

DOC typically opens Great Walk bookings in May each year. Check doc.govt.nz in late May and set a reminder - popular dates at Luxmore Hut can sell out within the first day of bookings opening.

The three Kepler Track huts

Understanding each hut helps you plan both the direction and pace of your walk:

Luxmore Hut (54 bunks): The alpine centrepiece of the Kepler, sitting above the bushline with views across Lake Te Anau and the Murchison Mountains. Most walkers stay here on night one (from Te Anau) or night three (reverse direction). The most in-demand hut on the track.

Iris Burn Hut (50 bunks): Deep in the Iris Burn valley after the spectacular alpine crossing. A lush, sheltered hut with good birdlife - kea at higher elevations and kākā in the forest.

Moturau Hut (40 bunks): On the shores of Lake Manapouri - a quieter location and a firm favourite for its lakeside setting. Night two for most walkers doing the track anti-clockwise.

Which direction is better for the Kepler Track - clockwise or anti-clockwise?

The most common direction is anti-clockwise: Te Anau to Luxmore Hut (Day 1), Luxmore to Iris Burn (Day 2, including the alpine section), Iris Burn to Moturau (Day 3), and Moturau back to Te Anau via Rainbow Reach (Day 4). This puts the demanding alpine crossing on Day 2 when legs are fresh. Anti-clockwise also means you walk the exposed ridge section earlier in the day, which is safer in terms of afternoon weather changes.

Costs: What to budget in 2026

Great Walk hut fees are set by DOC and increase periodically. As a guide for your planning:

  • Great Walk hut pass: Adult fees are charged per night per hut. Check doc.govt.nz for current pricing - fees are typically in the NZD $35 - $75 per person per night range depending on the season.
  • Camping (Brod Bay): Campsite fees are cheaper than hut fees. Same booking system applies during the Great Walk season.
  • Track transport: Fiordland Outdoors offers scheduled transport from Te Anau lakefront - a clean solution that removes the need for a car shuffle.

Water taxi service to the Kepler Track

Catch the Kepler Water Taxi across Lake Te Anau, and you’ll be on the world-famous track in less than 15 minutes ready to tackle your day walk of choice. You can take the Kepler Water Taxi in either direction, purchasing a one way or a return ticket on our scheduled daily departures.

Can you walk the Kepler Track outside the Great Walk season?

The Kepler Track is accessible year-round, but the experience changes significantly in the off-season (May to late October). Outside the Great Walk season:

  • Great Walk huts convert to standard backcountry huts - cheaper, first-come-first-served, no advance booking required.
  • The alpine section (Luxmore Hut to Iris Burn Hut) may be closed in winter due to snow and avalanche risk. Check DOC track conditions before departure.
  • Fewer people on the track - this is part of the appeal for experienced trampers comfortable with variable conditions.

Can I do the Kepler Track in winter?

Parts of the Kepler Track remain open year-round, but the exposed alpine section between Luxmore and Iris Burn Huts is subject to seasonal closure during winter. This is the most scenic and memorable section of the track. Most walkers planning a full circuit opt for the Great Walk season (late October to late April) to ensure the full route is accessible. Always check current DOC track conditions before setting out in winter months.

Is there day walk options on the Kepler Track?

Not everyone has four days - and the Kepler delivers excellent day walk options too. The Luxmore summit return (from the Control Gates, Te Anau) is one of Fiordland's best full-day walks: big elevation gain, bush line views, and the Luxmore Hut as a lunch stop.

Brod Bay is also popular and Fiordland Outdoors provides day walk transport options for those wanting to explore the Kepler without a multi-day commitment.
