Milford Track in Winter
The Milford Track in winter is wild, rugged, beautiful and recommended for experienced hikers only. If you’re looking to hike in the off-season, our transport packages are the simplest way to get you there and back again.
The water taxi departs at 8:30 am and is the earliest boat departure from Te Anau Downs.
Winter track transport charters to the Milford Track are subject to a minimum of 6 passengers and a favourable weather forecast. Weather, track conditions and less demand means the service is able to operate between June and September.
Milford Track Transport Options
- Step 1 Optional Bus transfer from Te Anau to Te Anau Downs

A 25-minute bus journey from Te Anau to Te Anau Downs. Bus departs at 8am.
- Step 2 Water taxi from Te Anau Downs to Glade Wharf

Take the water taxi from Te Anau Downs for a 50-minute boat journey across Lake Te Anau to Glade Wharf and the start of the Milford Track. The water taxi departs at 8:30am.
- Step 3 Milford Track Hike

Hike the Milford Track Great Walk.
- Step 4 Water taxi from Sandfly Point to Milford Sound

At the end of the Milford Track (Sandfly Point), meet the Sandfly Point transfer boat which will continuously shuttle walkers back and forth from the end of the track to Deepwater Basin, Milford Sound between 1 pm and 3 pm.
- Step 5 Bus journey back to Te Anau, Te Anau Downs or Queenstown

Bus transfer from Milford Sound back to Te Anau and Te Anau Downs. Relax and enjoy the commentary. Bus departs at 2.30 pm.
