Milford Track Independent Day Walking
While the full Milford Track takes around four days to complete and books out quickly each season, an independent Milford Track day walk is the perfect option for a short and sweet Milford Track experience.
Milford Track Day Walk from Milford Sound
Independent walkers can take the water taxi from Milford Sound to Sandfly Point for a day hike on the Milford Track.
A stunning 10-minute boat journey across Deep Water Basin transfers you to Sandfly Point, where you can explore one of the world’s most famous walks. At your own pace, take in the highlights of the Milford Track including views of Lake Ada and the Arthur River as you walk through emerald-green Fiordland rainforest before reaching Giant Gate Falls. Cross the swing bridge and capture an epic photograph of the famous falls.
A perfect Milford Sound walk option, this section of the track is flat and easy-going, making it suitable for everyone. A walk to Giant Gate Falls will take 3-4 hours return. Pre-booking for the water taxi is essential.
Milford Track Day Walk from Te Anau Downs
For those looking to get to the Milford Track from Te Anau Downs, our water taxi departs daily for private charters to Glade Wharf. Depending on your pace, you may be able to reach Lake Mintaro and make the most of an incredible place for lunch. The Milford Track Water Taxi departs Te Anau Downs daily during the Great Walks season.

“…At every step of the way fresh vistas of exceeding beauty open up through the tall spreading pines on every hand, while at every succeeding bend in the river, scenes of wild savage grandeur are presented…. So much we recognised as we journeyed onward, drinking in the wondrous scene with every breath we drew.” William McHutcheson, 1892.
