When is the Best Time to Walk the Milford Track During the Great Walks Season

The Milford Track is widely regarded as one of the greatest walks in the world. Located in Fiordland National Park, this iconic New Zealand Great Walk takes hikers through lush rainforest, past towering waterfalls, over the famous Mackinnon Pass, and finishes near Milford Sound / Piopiotahi.

Every year thousands of walkers travel to Fiordland to experience the Milford Track, and choosing the right time to walk can make a big difference to your experience.

The Milford Track Great Walks season runs from late October through to the end of April, when the Department of Conservation (DOC) operates the huts and the track infrastructure is fully maintained.

But within that season, some months consistently offer better walking conditions than others.

Our View: When is the Best Time to Walk the Milford Track

Based on our experience over 13 years transporting Milford Track walkers, we believe the best time to walk the Milford Track is from late-January through to the end of April.

This period tends to provide the most enjoyable balance of weather, track conditions, and overall walking comfort.

While every season in Fiordland is unique, these months generally deliver a great experience on the Milford Track.

Late January and February

After the busy Christmas and New Year period, the Milford Track tends to settle into a steady rhythm.

Walking the Milford Track in late January and February usually offers:

  • Long daylight hours
  • Warmer daytime temperatures
  • Lush green forest and strong waterfalls

However, midsummer temperatures can occasionally mean the huts feel warm at night, especially after a sunny day.

March and April - Our Favourite Time

If we had to choose the single best time to walk the Milford Track, it would be March and April.

Autumn in Fiordland often brings:

  • More settled weather patterns
  • Cooler and more comfortable walking temperatures
  • Less humidity
  • More comfortable hut temperatures at night

Many experienced hikers say the Milford Track in autumn offers some of the most pleasant walking conditions of the entire Great Walks season.

March and April can also feel a little quieter once the peak summer period has passed.

Spring on the Milford Track

The early Great Walks season (late October to December) can still be a beautiful time to walk the Milford Track, but it can also bring more unpredictable weather.

Spring in Fiordland may include:

  • Heavy rainfall events
  • Occasional track disruptions or temporary closures
  • Snow sometimes lingering on Mackinnon Pass early in the season

The waterfalls during this time can be spectacular, but walkers should be prepared for changeable conditions.

The Christmas and New Year Peak Period

The three weeks around Christmas and New Year are the most popular time of the year on the Milford Track.

During this peak period Milford Track hut tickets sell out very quickly. If you’re hoping to walk the Milford Track during the Christmas and New Year period, it’s a good idea to have backup dates available. This is the busiest time of the Milford Track Great Walks season, and hut tickets often sell out quickly due to high demand. Having some flexibility in your dates will give you a much better chance of securing Milford Track bookings.

Getting To and From the Milford Track

Because of its remote location, walking the Milford Track requires boat transfers at both the start and the end of the track.

Walkers begin their journey with a boat transfer across Lake Te Anau to Glade Wharf, which is the start of the Milford Track. After completing the walk, hikers finish at Sandfly Point, where a water taxi takes you across the fjord to Milford Sound.

Fiordland Outdoors specialises in Milford Track transport and has been helping walkers access the track for more than 13 years.

Fiordland Outdoors offer:

  • Multiple daily departures to Glade Wharf
  • The widest range of Milford Track transport options
  • The earliest water taxi pickups from Sandfly Point ( running from 12.30pm to 4.30pm)
  • Consistent 5 star Google reviews for our customer service

Final Thoughts

The Milford Track is spectacular throughout the Great Walks season, but timing your walk well can significantly enhance your experience.

Based on years of experience helping walkers reach the track, our recommendation is:

Best time to walk the Milford Track:

  • Mid-January to the end of April
  • With March and April often offering the most settled conditions

Cooler temperatures, comfortable hut nights, and often more settled weather make autumn one of the most enjoyable times to experience this world-famous walk.

If you’re planning your Milford Track adventure, choosing the right time of year can make all the difference.
